From 1997 until 2002, the Steering Committee for the proposed National Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses of Canada met and worked together on the Constitution and Bylaws for the National Association they were working towards forming. Once completed, they submitted this document to the Federal Minister of Industry for approval and to meet the requirements for an association to be considered incorporated. The Minister of Industry, Alan Rock approved these bylaws and issued "Letters Patent" on June 14, 2002.
More recently, NAPAN© worked towards Charitable Association status. To this end, the Objectives of the original Constitution and Bylaws were amended by Board approval on October 1, 2011 and by membership quorum vote on October 2, 2011. This revised set of bylaws was submitted again to the Minister of Industry for approval. The revision has been approved and Supplementary Letters Patent issued to NAPAN© on January 26, 2012.
